In the financially austere times, mobile phone sales remains robust. New generation handsets from Nokia with the N96, Sony Ericsson music phone W980, Apple 3G iphone and an array of fresh looking handsets from Samsung and LG has kept interest high in new mobile technology as users get to grips with the feature busting specifications of these new bright, sleek products.

Both Orange and T-Mobile report better than expected sales, with an increased number buying online. The mobile market shows no sign of diminishing, but there is a shift from discounting handsets to sign up new customers, to providing improved tariff packages to existing ones and using the new handset as the marketing tool.

The 3G handset is geared up to see record sales on the back of the run in to Christmas. The next step for mobiles is easier internet browsing and location derived software in 2009. The technology never stops.

Richard Britten has been appointed finance director of Link Telecom.

A major part of the brief for the former oil industry executive is to lubricate the wheels that will keep the group on track to maintain its impressive growth record.

Richard qualified as a chartered accountant with Ernst & Young, before joining the London head office of Enterprise Oil, the FTSE 100 listed oil explorer and producer that was to become former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s first privatisation.

Initially involved in financial planning, Richard moved overseas to Rome to help launch and build Enterprise Oil’s fledgling Italian business, holding both financial and commercial responsibilities, later returning to London to head up the strategic planning function across the whole group.

Following the acquisition of the company by Shell, Richard headed north in 2003 to become financial controller of the international division of Bradford-based Provident Financial, actively helping the group to build a global portfolio of two million customers.

Richard explained: ‘My brief is to create the structure and stability to enable Link Telecom to grow and achieve its set objectives, also supporting MD Gary Fawcett in managing the areas of the business in which we are looking to invest, as well as at potential further acquisitions to accelerate the group’s expansion.’

Originally from Cheshire, Richard, 40, lives in Beckwithshaw, Harrogate, with his wife and two daughters. His interests include food and wine, and golf.
