THE IMPORTANCE OF CALL RECORDING » 20/01/09

Call recording is becoming compulsory on 6 March 2009 only for those firms which deal in equities, bonds and derivatives markets, and which take client instructions via the telephone. However, the FSA’s call recording rules will be of interest to any FSA regulated business looking to manage risks, improve training and monitor customer care over the telephone.

From a robust TCF policy (Treating Customers Fairly) to settling complaint issues. The FSA has stipulated that call records must be readily accessible, and for records to be tamper-proof, so getting the right system is key. If recordings are capable of being altered or manipulated then they will not be reliable evidence of anything. Similarly, ease of retrieval is essential part, given the potential volume of calls that could well be recorded, even in a small organisation.

LINK TELECOM TRADING UP 15% ON PREVIOUS YEAR » 18/02/09

Independent Yorkshire telecommunications group Link Telecom has announced strong underlying growth in both turnover and gross profit for 2008, with both measures showing a near 15% increase on 2007.

Growth comes from the group’s focus on B2B activities following its withdrawal from the consumer market last year. Link Telecom anticipates further significant growth in this area during 2009 and is on target to deliver revenues of £16 million this year.

Gary Fawcett, chief executive of Keighley-based Link Telecom, is upbeat about current and future trading prospects, which are bucking the economic downturn. He said: ‘Despite the diminishing returns in the consumer market which prompted our exit, Link Telecom’s business-to-business operations go from strength to strength.

‘We are unique in our industry in having direct relationships with all five mobile networks, as well as our significant capabilities in fixed line calls and business systems. ‘While our existing customer retention is excellent, cost-conscious businesses, charities and other large organisations are showing much greater interest in how we can help them save money, bringing us significant new business opportunities. ‘In fact, last month we secured the contract to provide mobile services to 600 users at the NSPCC, saving them 50% per annum on their costs.

‘Although Link Telecom is based in West Yorkshire, it actually has a national footprint and provides services to organisations of all sizes right across England and Wales. ‘Additionally, we are very active in working with, and providing solutions to the education sector, including both schools and universities. Following successful pilot schemes in local schools, we are now just one step away from launching a major project involving the use of smartphones in schools across the Bradford area.

‘These excellent trading levels reflect the continuing success of our strategy. Link Telecom’s business is extremely well positioned to respond to future opportunities and we anticipate a record performance in 2009.’ Matthew Wright, commercial director of Link Telecom, added: ‘One thing is for certain - the region’s companies and organisations need to stand firm and do business locally wherever possible, in order to keep money circulating in the local economy. In this way, we can all help contribute to our own economic stability.’
