BEATING THE CRUNCH » 03/11/08

In the financially austere times, mobile phone sales remains robust.
New generation handsets from Nokia with the N96, Sony Ericsson
music phone W980, Apple 3G iphone and an array of fresh looking
handsets from Samsung and LG has kept interest high in new
mobile technology as users get to grips with the feature busting
specifications of these new bright, sleek products.
Both Orange and T-Mobile report better than expected sales, with
an increased number buying online. The mobile market shows no
sign of diminishing, but there is a shift from discounting handsets
to sign up new customers, to providing improved tariff packages to
existing ones and using the new handset as the marketing tool.

The
3G handset is geared up to see record sales on the back of the
run in to Christmas. The next step for mobiles is easier internet browsing and location
derived software in 2009. The technology never stops.

PARTNERSHIP FOR LEARNING » 22/04/08

Pupils and teachers at Newhall Park Primary School in Bierley, Bradford, are being equipped with state-of-the-art mobile communications devices as they adopt e-learning through a ground-breaking local business-education partnership.
Thought to be the first private and public sector partnership of its kind in the UK to be undertaken in primary education, Newhall Park staff and Year 5 and 6 children are being given free use of Personal Digitial Assistants (PDAs) by leading independent communications group Link Telecom.
Keighley-based Link Telecom, now one of the North of England’s leading private sector sponsors of education-related initiatives, is working on the pioneering project with The Children’s University Bradford & District and Education Bradford.
Link Telecom’s managing director Gary Fawcett explained: “The main thrust of the initiative is to determine the impact of using PDAs as learning tools and give a clearer understanding of the ways in which the education process, educational achievements and personal aspirations can be enhanced through the use of mobile electronic devices.”
Planning of the programme, which will run for at least two years, began last September. Selected Newhall Park Primary School teaching personnel are now being trained by Link Telecom in the use of Glofiish X600 PDAs, which are integrated with the classroom’s Interactive Whiteboard via the teacher’s Wi-Fi enabled lap top. Once complete, e-learning will then begin in earnest with pupils in May 2008 to coincide with the integration of the programme with Education Bradford software.
